Little India of George Town

Among the enchanting street networks and precints in the George Town World Heritage Site, Little India remains a most colourful and dynamic enclave. It sustains cultural features unchanged from the past that coexist with newer, modern elements permeating this neighbourhood located in the north-eastern cape on Penang Island.

The brochure includes a street map with landmarks and notable spots for ease of visitors to walk through Little India while appreciating its treasures – both in terms of buildings and cultural traits. It also relates interesting and little-known facts about various aspects related to this richly concentrated inner-city area, including their history, communities, trades, landmarks, festivals, streetscape and architectures.

This guide aims to assist visitors to better understand and enjoy many of the remaining buildings which comprise George Town's Historic Commercial and Civic Precincts, developed under two distinct administrative phases – under the British East India Company (EIC) (1786–1858) & under British Crown rule (1941–1945) during World War II (WWII).

The Clan Jetties of George Town

Along Weld Quay which stretches lengthwise the south eastern coastline of George Town, one can find water villages with rows of wooden houses on stilts built above the sea and connected by planked walkways. These are the Clan Jetties of George Town, a dwelling place of the Chinese Hokkien immigrants who shared common surnames and originated from similar hometowns in China.

The intangible heritage of George Town is not only a vital contributing factor to the significance of the World Heritage Site, but it is also what gives the city its richness and vitality. This brochure features 23 selected traditional trades in George Town.

George Town’s Northam Road Protestant Cemetery

The old Protestant Cemetery in George Town was created soon after the British East India Company (EIC) established a settlement in Penang in 1786. It is the final resting place of many important personalities connected to the establishment and early growth of George Town and Penang, including, its founder Francis Light, Governors, officers, EIC officials and merchants.

The brochure provides background information, as well as a map to the tombs of a number of historic personalities interred within the Cemetery. Symbolism of motifs on tombs, design and material of tombstones, and the connection between the Cemetery and St George’s Church are also explored in this publication.

A Guide to Selected Chinese Clan Houses in the George Town World Heritage Site

In the nineteenth century a large number of Chinese migrated southwards to the Nanyang with the hope of making a better life for themselves. In George Town they formed associations based on social, religious, regional, or clan associations as they realised the importance of unity in order to overcome the challenges of surviving in an unfamiliar environment. Chinese clan associations in George Town are organisations that emphasise the importance of blood ties.

The ancestral temples situated along the streets of George Town will always be home to all clan members – whether they are based in Penang or not – and they hold precious sources of information about clan history for the future generations of Penang Chinese. The brochure features 17 clan houses in George Town, a map and the spelling list of Chinese surnames.
