The George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) is pleased to announce an inaugural international symposium on Intangible Cultural Heritage from 30 November (Monday) to 02 December (Wednesday) at Bayview Hotel George Town, Penang. The theme of this year symposium focuses on Innovative Practices, Sustainable Strategies, and Lessons Learnt. This symposium is co-organize by the Penang Institute, in partnership with the Penang Global Tourism.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Seong-Yong Park, Assistant Director-General of the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO. He will deliver a presentation on “Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding, Communities, and Sustainable Development”.
The symposium also features ten intangible cultural heritage experts from Asia region. They are Dr. Katherine Muller-Marin (UNESCO Hanoi Office), Professor Chia-Yu Hu (National Taiwan University), Professor Sidney C.H. Cheung (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Professor Tan Sooi Beng (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Associate Professor Tik-Sang Liu (Hong Kong University of Science and Techonology), Dr. Alexandra Denes (Chiang Mai University, Thailand), Madam Eva Marie S. Medina (City Mayor of Vigan, the Philippines), Ms. Leong Wai Man (Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau), Ms. Janet Pillai (Malaysia) and a representative from the Singapore National Heritage Board.
