Phase 1: Greening of Lebuh Acheh, Lebuh Armenian and Armenian Park

The greening project of Lebuh Acheh-Lebuh Armenian-Armenian Park is a result of the Cleaner Greener Penang initiative by the Penang State Government, and in keeping with the heritage management plan of George Town which includes the improvement of streetscapes and to increase walkability. The project is a joint effort between GTWHI, the Penang Municipal Authorities (Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, MPPP), Think City Sdn Bhd and Penang Institute.

Following the pilot project of Carnarvon Street in 2011, Armenian Park and the streets bordering it, as the focal point of the Heritage Core Zone, have been selected as Phase 1 of the project. Greening the streets will result in well shaded walkways that will encourage exploration by foot, and a park to provide a resting point for visitors as well as a recreational space for residents.

A consultation process with the Armenian-Acheh community recently took place and the results are being analysed.

Project Principles

  • A more connected city with increased walkability will increase connectivity to help improve business activities and improve the George Town experience.
  • Improving streetscapes, with sensitivity towards the entryway to the city's heritage zone
  • Empowering communities to be involved in the management of their shared spaces
