Background

The 7th of July is a special day for George Town. On this day in 2008, Melaka and George Town were jointly inscribed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Since then, it has become a day of celebration and commemoration for all Penangites.

Since 2014, the celebrations have been curated around specific cultural themes, including crafts, festive foods, and traditional games and sports. This year, the George Town Heritage Celebrations have been crafted around a near-invisible yet highly important aspect of culture: Oral Traditions and Expressions.
